Cotton Dimity
A lightweight woven, cotton dimity is a corded fabric— two or more yarns are woven together to create raised ‘lines’ in the fabric. The derivation of the name is uncertain, but it may refer to the Greek, di mitos, for ‘two threads.’ The pattern of the cords may be lengthwise, creating stripes, or lengthwise and crosswise, creating checks or windowpanes. Dimity may also be dyed or printed. For freshness on a hot summer day, we selected a dimity with a mint green, clipped dot woven in the center of the window pane. This fabric may also be machine washed and needs little pressing if promptly hung on a hanger and smoothed with the hand. If you do choose to iron, this fabric should be ironed from the wrong side.
